Now is the time to help shape the future of food and agriculture in Grant County! With obesity, diabetes, food affordability, hunger, an economic downturn and diminishing environments to support food production, the issues surrounding food and agriculture have reached a critical point.
Fortunately, the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities initiative and Grant County Board of Commissioners have stepped up to address these issues in a comprehensive, collaborative and dynamic manner through the formation of the Grant County Food Policy Council (GCFPC). The GCFPC monitors the local food system, encourages and coordinates connections between leaders and decision-makers, and identifies policies, projects, programs and partnerships that cultivate a resilient and sustainable food system—a system that offers economic opportunities, healthier environments and affordable and nutritious food for all.
Food Policy Council Positions
The County commission is currently seeking one member to serve a three-year term on the GCFPC. Council members are responsible for advising County commissioners on policies, potential projects, and partnerships related to our local food and agricultural system.
The criteria that the Commissioners may use for selecting members include:
- Commitment to a two- or three-year long term requiring regular attendance and participation in Food Policy Council meetings and active membership on at least one sub-committee
- Ability to collaborate effectively with local government, organizations and community members and represent Grant County at the New Mexico Food and Ag. Policy Council;
- Ability to generate policy action items for the Council to pursue;
- Capacity to bring specific food system relationships and resources to the effort, as well as
- potential to represent diverse sectors of the local food system; and
- Lives and works predominantly within Grant County.
Priorities for 2012 are expected to include:
- the availability of healthy, affordable food to all residents;
- building regional demand for locally produced foods and food products;
- local food production and distribution and land use policies;
- expanding the networking role of the Council;
- the capacity of local communities to engage in healthy food practices;
- and food system strategic planning.
